The Animal Shelter of Pell City is having a Christmas Day Open House so anyone wishing to bring a little joy to some of the shelter animals, like these two Labrador retriever-mixed puppies, may do so Christmas Day afternoon. Volunteers can walk dogs or just pet some of the many cats and dogs temporarily housed at the shelter.

PELL CITY — Animal Shelter of Pell City volunteers are hoping to spread a little Christmas joy to homeless animals with its second annual Christmas Open House.

“It’s so that the animals don’t spend Christmas alone,” said Melissa Wilson, a volunteer and board member of the Animal Shelter of Pell City.

Wilson said the Christmas Day Open House is set for noon until 4 p.m. Christmas Day. Refreshments are available to guests.

“Last year, we had a lot more people come out than we thought we would,” Wilson said. “We figured we would only see 10 to15 people, but people just kept coming.”

She said about 250 people came to the animal shelter open house last year.

“It was a really big turnout,” Wilson said. “Our goal was to try and walk all the dogs at least one time. By the end of the day, all the dogs were walked five to six times, and the cat room was full of people.”

Currently, the animal shelter, located at 1071 Airport Road, houses 150 animals, about 90 dogs and 60 cats.

Construction of an addition to the shelter is under way.

“We’re doubling the size of the dog area,” Wilson said.

She said construction of the addition began about a month ago.

“We hope it is finished by the summer of next year,” Wilson said.

She said at last year’s Christmas Open House, organizers saw families with children come to help pet a cat or walk a dog. There were also single people who couldn’t make it home for Christmas who volunteered a few minutes to make an animal happy.

“We had retired people, and people who were visiting that read about the open house in the newspaper,” Wilson said.

She said they had people from Ashville, Vincent, Trussville and even Birmingham come out to the shelter and volunteer their time to give a little joy to animals waiting for a new home.

“It wasn’t just local people who lived 5 minutes away from the shelter,” Wilson said. “We had people from all over.”

She said there are no adoptions Christmas Day, but if someone wants to adopt an animal, the shelter is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Saturday.
