Don Smith, executive director of the St. Clair County Economic Development Council, has it exactly right.

For St. Clair County to progress, it will take strong communication and a philosophy of regionalism put into practice.

That’s was the centerpiece of his talk at the Partnership for Tomorrow breakfast, a gathering of community and municipalities’ leaders and corporate representatives. All have invested in a multi-year, public/private initiative that is paving the way for St. Clair County to become a leader in economic development in the state.

Smith stressed the need for communication and cooperation throughout the county and a realization that what is good for one area is good for all areas. As an example, he cited a company that located in one part of the county, but its payroll reflects employees from virtually every city in St. Clair.

Over the past 10 years, since the EDC was formed, the organization’s dedication to a regional approach has worked well, and St. Clair County has become the fastest growing county in the state.

It is an effort all citizens should take pride in. It’s working, and it is continuing to keep St. Clair County a leader others want to follow.
