The Ragland Purple Devils won the St. Clair County Baseball Tournament Saturday beating the host Springville Tigers 4-1 in the title game.

Ragland earned the right to play for the crown as they defeated the St. Clair County Saints 11-10 in eight innings earlier in the day.

The Tigers grabbed a spot in the championship game by knocking off Moody 5-4 the night before. The Blue Devils defeated Ashville 9-4 in the first game of the tournament.

Moody 9, Ashville 4

Three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning by Moody were enough to hold off the Bulldogs as the Blue Devils won 9-4. It was the first win of the season for the Blue Devils. With the loss, Ashville slipped to 1-3.

Moody took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Richard Yeager scored on a RBI single by Blake Sawyer.

It stayed 1-0 until the top of the fifth inning as Moody’s Tyler Hamby and Ashville’s Kyle Looney were locked in a pitcher’s duel.

The Blue Devils added 3 runs in the fifth inning. Jordan Gill reached on an error and Hamby and Yeager singled to load the bases. Travis Gann walked to force in a run and Sawyer followed with a 2-run double to centerfield to make it 4-0.

In the sixth inning, Moody added 3 more runs to make it 7-0 and all the runs were unearned. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and then Ashton Hadaway and Yeager scored on an Ashville error. Taylor Gilliland grounded out but Gann scored on the play.

Ashville finally dented the scoreboard and got to Hamby in the bottom of the sixth inning. William Farmer walked and Ryan Wise followed with a single. Parker Wadsworth then had a RBI single that scored Farmer to make it 7-1. Looney had a RBI double that scored Wise and then E.J. Moss followed with a 2-run triple that scored Wadsworth and Looney and make the score 7-4.

Moody added two insurance runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 9-4.

Hamby picked up the win while Looney suffered the loss and slipped to 0-2. He went 4 innings and gave up 5 runs on 6 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3.

Austin Whisenhunt worked 2 innings and gave up 4 runs on 2 hits. He walked 5 batters. Jacob Wicks pitched the final innings and gave up 1 hit and struck out 1.

Springville 5, Moody 4

Matt Lipscomb led Springville at the plate and on the mound. Lipscomb was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and 2 RBIs. The home run came with Springville trailing 4-3 in the fifth inning.

Lipscomb was also the winning pitcher as he tossed 3 innings in relief for starter Cody Mize. Mize gave up 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3. Lipscomb earned the victory throwing 3 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2.

Wes Logan and Mize also had 1 hit each for Springville.

For Moody, Austyn Graff was the losing pitcher giving up 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 3 in 5 innings of work. Yeager and Drew Peoples were both 2-for-4 with 2 singles. Gann also had 2 hits.

“It was a game where we beat ourselves by making a few mistakes and not putting the ball in play with men in scoring position,” said Moody coach Ralph Greaux. “In the second inning, Springville scored 2 runs on 2 errors and no base hits. The ball never left the infield and they scored 2 runs. We battled back, and in the fifth inning we are up 4-3, but our pitcher, Austyn Graff, gave up a 2-run home run and we ended up losing 5-4.”

With the loss, Moody slipped to 1-4 overall.

Ragland 11, SCCHS 10

In a game that went back and forth from start to finish, Ragland fought back numerous times and defeated SCCHS 11-10 in eight innings.

The winning run came on a walk with the bases loaded.

Trailing 9-8, Ragland loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with no outs. Saint pitcher Ian Kennedy struck out the next two batters. But the next batter, Scotty Smith walked to tie the game at 9-9 and send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, St. Clair’s Taylor Parsons scored on a balk by Ragland pitcher Jacob Hollingsworth to give the Saints a 10-9 lead.

With its back to the wall and facing elimination, Ragland rose to the occasion again in the bottom of the eighth inning as Kurt Lipscomb had a RBI double to tie the game at 10-10. A wild pitch moved Lipscomb to third base and no one out. Caleb Crews was hit by a pitch and then Shane Phillips was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Landon Bice was up to bat and worked Kennedy to a 3-0 count. Kennedy then threw two consecutive strikes to make it a full count. The next pitch was ball four and Lipscomb scored the winning run as Ragland advanced to the championship game with the 11-10 victory.

Hollingsworth picked up the win while the losing pitcher was Kennedy.

Karsen Winn had 2 hits for Ragland. Lipscomb, Cameron Hazelwood and Phillips all had one hit each.

Despite the win, Ragland coach Rodney Lipscomb said it was the worst game his guys had played all year.

“The last inning was wild,” Lipscomb said. “They had control problems and we were patient at the plate.”

Ragland 4, Springville 1

Lipscomb pitched a complete game 2-hitter for Ragland as the Purple Devils won the county tournament for the first time in what Coach Lipscomb called, “a long time.”

Lipscomb struck out 11 and did not walk a batter. Both Springville hits came in the second inning and that’s when they scored their only run. The hits were by Matt Gibson and Ben Stewart.

At the plate for Ragland, Hazelwood was 3-for-4 with 2 singles and a double. Crews was 2-for-3 with a single and double while Bice was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles. Justin Ferguson was the losing pitcher for Springville working into the third inning. He gave up 4 runs on 7 hits. Wes Logan pitching 4 scoreless innings in relief while giving up only 2 hits.

“We have three goals this year and winning the county crown was our first one,” Lipscomb said.

Ragland improved to 4-3 on the season.

Ragland’s Kurt Lipscomb was named tournament MVP.

Making the All-Tournament Team included Cameron Hazelwood, Karsen Winn and Landon Bice from Ragland; Wes Logan and Matt Lipscomb from Springville; Justin Tressillian and Ian Kennedy from SCCHS; Tyler Hamby and Travis Gann from Moody; and Kyle Looney from Ashville.
