Another death attributed to last Wednesday’s deadly storms and tornadoes brings St. Clair County’s death toll to 15.

Coroner Dennis Russell said an infant, born premature after its mother was injured, is the 15th storm victim.

“The infant’s cause of death was extreme prematurity,” Russell said.

“The reason for that was the mother was injured when their home was destroyed and went into premature labor.”

Russell identified the infant’s parents as Rachael and Randy Matthews of Ray Wyatt Road, Ashville.

The baby was born on April 30 and died Tuesday at University Hospital in Birmingham.

“To my knowledge, this is the most number of lives lost to a natural disaster event in this county,” Russell said.
