As people in Haiti continue to recover from a terrible earthquake, help is being seen and felt all over the world — including right here in St. Clair County.

Over 200,000 people have died as a result of the devastation and thousand of people are still missing. As a result of this terrible disaster, Odenville Middle School’s Student Government Association is sponsoring a fundraiser to help raise funds for Hope For Haiti during the next two weeks.

“Our SGA President, Anisa Heilman, approached me after the terrible earthquake hit Haiti about doing something for the people,” said Tammy Williams, SGA Sponsor. “I was so proud that it was Anisa’s idea. We had an emergency SGA meeting the next day concerning the terrible disaster and the SGA not only voted to do something, but actually launched its campaign the very next day.”

OMS Principal Debra Carroll said it is wonderful to see students take the initiative to take on such a philanthropic project as Hope For Haiti.

Students have been giving to the fundraising project this past week and will continue for the next two weeks. The SGA will be at the Odenville Piggly Wiggly this Saturday, February 6, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. helping customers bag their groceries and take to the car for tips to donate to Hope For Haiti.

Individuals and businesses are welcome to make a donation to the Hope For Haiti project. The funds will be sent to the American Red Cross to purchase water, food and medical supplies. Please make checks payable to OMS or to the American Red Cross and mail to Odenville Middle School, P.O. Box 610 Odenville, Ala., 35120.
